Description:

  • The research proposes the investigation of the feasibility of manufacturing a small-scale sensor which can transmit signals about displacements in a soil mass through the soil medium without the need for a direct-wired connection. In its simplest configuration, the sensor may simply be a small acoustic emitter, which is set in the soil mass during laboratory tests or during field construction. An acoustic pulse emitted by the device could be detected by several geophones at the surface of the soil mass and its current position determined by calculation of travel times and subsequent triangulation of the sensor's position. Other forms of position sensing are also being reviewed. Funding is from the Louisiana Transportation Research Center.
