Evaluation of Drill Pipes in Mini-Horizontal Directional Drilling Construction

Status :
Completed
Contract Number:
60556/40556
Time Period:
Feb 1998 - Jun 2001
Principal Investigators :
P. Hadala, R. McKim, and A. Saber

Sponsored by:
  • Louisiana Board of Regents
  • Seam-Mac Tube, LLC
  • Texas Pup, Inc

Objectives:
  • to examine the state of stress in drill  rod used in mini-HDD at locations well removed from the joints where Mechanics of Materials principles should be sufficient to understand the existing conditions
  • to design and build a drill rod bending fatigue testing machine
  • to experimentally determine the bending state induced by the machine's enforced deformations
  • to begin a fatigue testing program on one style of drill rod used in mini-HDD

Report:
Evaluation of Drill Pipe in Mini-HDD Construction: Development of a Fatigue Testing Machine and Analysis of Severely Bent Drill Rods (June 2001)
