Rationale: |
As a response to frequent inquiries, the Trenchless Technology Center (TTC) prepared its first report Survey of Bid Prices for Trenchless Rehabilitation and Replacement of Pipelines and Manholes in 2000. The report was received with great interest revealing that both users and providers of utility rehabilitation/renewal services find information about the pricing in the North American trenchless technology market valuable. There are still many municipalities with little or no experience in trenchless methods that are encouraged by the general acceptance of these methods and would like to start utilizing them. Municipal agencies with extensive trenchless practice want to find out the experience of other agencies. Although bid documents are public records, municipal agencies rarely have a chance to look into documents other than their own. Contractors are usually interested to learn the pricing in the market to be able to prepare competent bids. The mutual sharing of information and exchange of experience can increase effectiveness in the bidding for jobs and allow cost comparisons between methods. |

Objectives: |
(1) To collect past and current cost data from municipalities and (2) to compile the gathered information and present it in an appropriate, easily comprehensible format. |
Scope: |
Currently, a total of 310 bid tabs or bidding summaries have been collected from 67
municipalities in 39 states. In addition to pipeline and manhole
rehabilitation/replacement methods, some new pipeline construction methods
are covered as well. The data on new
installation was insufficient to allow examination of some important
variables such as cost versus depth for each method. It is intended to expand
the data collection in this area in future reports |

Deliverables: |
The study resulted in a report and a database written in MS Access 2000. |
The report presents series of graphs that show the current price range of trenchless methods and open cut alternatives.
The database allows customized summary reports for selected methods for either whole country or, narrowing the focus, for USA regions, states or municipalities.
