Description:
  • The research investigats the secondary consolidation of organic silts and clays. Its fundamental causes and whether it begins simultaneously with or sequentially after primary consolidation are not well understood. Most of what is known about the phenomena come from one-dimensional laboratory tests under normal gravity. By increasing the gravitational field (on a geotechnical centrifuge) while holding the applied total stress constant, the scaling of temporal events may be changed and the nature of this change can give insight into the cause and time variation of the phenomena. Secondary consolidation has an impact on volume change of soils in many aspects of civil engineering.
